Urban Campfire II

Saturday 14. March at 20:00 - 22:00

Doors open at 19:30

Rocas café-théâtre / café-concert, Luxembourg

A passionate believer in the ferocious power of story to connect us with each other and our enduring humanity, Ben McGuire is an Australian lawyer, writer, storyteller, and film-maker. 🎭

He is based in Berlin, from where he continues to lose a decade-long war with German grammar, and is a regular storyteller at Berlin`s premier storytelling event, The Bear. ✨ 🎙️

Flying in for this special event, Ben invites you to join him and a cast of international storytellers - Ceren (Turkey), Ben McIlroy (Ireland), Jess Bauldry (England), Joana Costa (Luxembourg / Portugal), and Tomas Thompson (England) – as we gather around the Urban Campfire for another evening of true stories, told live in Luxembourg. 🔥🪵

When Ben walked into the 90th birthday party of Irmgard Ohlman, an old woman he had never met, little did he know that over the next two years they would become dear friends through his regular visits to her Berlin nursing home. As Irmgard`s life force ebbed away and she prepared herself to die, she shared with Ben spell-binding stories from her long and extraordinary life and confided in him secrets that not even her family knew.

At just 23, what is it to realize that you have just unthinkingly uttered the single wrong word that will have you separated from your baby daughter and shoved onto a train carrying 226 German women to a Russian prisoner of war camp in deepest Siberia? Where do you find the courage to face down Russian guards armed with machine guns to protect the lives and honour of your fellow prisoners? And how do you bear the desperate longing to be reunited with the infant daughter to whom you say “Mummy will be back soon darling!” the night the Russian soldiers take you away?

In a long-form story that reminds us of the power of love and hope, Ben shares the beauty and benediction of that unexpected friendship, his wonder at the stories of an incredible life, and how the iron-will and death-defying resilience of the woman he came to call “Oma” came to make all the difference when Ben`s own life was hanging by a thread.

Note on recording: Your presence around the crackle of this Urban Campfire is an exciting part of the artistic process as Ben`s stories will be recorded for audiobook publication. The first two volumes in his series of true stories told live, How to Jump a Fence – True Stories, Told Live (Volume I) and Watermelon Seeks Face – True Stories, Told Live (Volume II), are scheduled for release in spring of 2026. 📚🎧
