SUMP in Baltics: How the Baltics are progressing in implementing sustainable urban mobility plans (SUMPs)
Thursday 4. December at 10:00 - 15:00
Registration starts at 9.45
Eiropas Savienības māja, Rīga
Latvia is taking important steps toward developing its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), and this moment provides a unique opportunity to learn from our closest neighbours who are already further ahead. Estonia and Lithuania have both recently launched or updated their SUMPs, gathering valuable practical lessons about integrated mobility planning, public transport optimisation, stakeholder involvement, data collection and long-term implementation. As SUMPs become a central pillar of the European Union’s sustainable mobility policy, this event, organised as part of an EU-funded project, will help Baltic cities align their strategies with European requirements, funding instruments, and future policy directions.
On 4 December, in Riga, we’re bringing together city leaders, public transport authorities, mobility experts and private sector companies, including innovative startups, to explore what’s working, what’s challenging, and what’s next for sustainable mobility in the Baltics. From rethinking public transportation to showcasing the importance of urban logistics, this event will showcase how urban logistics is the driving force for economic efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Participants will learn how Estonia and Lithuania approached SUMP creation, what successes and obstacles they encountered, and how cities in Latvia can use these lessons when shaping their own strategies. The event will also include a practical workshop exploring data needs and cooperation models for building more resilient, people-centred public transport systems.
Join us in Riga to gain inspiration from across the Baltic region, compare approaches, and define actionable steps toward developing stronger, data-driven, EU-aligned SUMPs.
Highlights of the event include:
- Presentation of a new SUMP development green action plan that has been developed in cooperation with major logistics sectors stakeholders in the region.
- Keynotes from Lithuania and Estonia on practical SUMP planning, public transport integration, data collection and implementation.
- Panel discussion on the lessons that Latvia should take from Lithuania and Estonia on SUMP development.
- Co-creation workshop exploring public transport challenges, data needs and cooperation models for smarter mobility planning.
- Startup Innovation Spotlight showcasing solutions directly responding to the challenges identified during the workshop.
