This course introduces the history and practical techniques of cyanotype. Cyanotype is a process in which an image is developed on paper through the interaction of iron-containing chemicals and ultraviolet light. The result is an image with white lines on a blue background. It is also known as sun printing or cyanotype.
This is a playful and engaging course during which participants will create blue-and-white cyanotypes and tone them using various techniques (such as baking soda and tea, among others). Participants will also learn how to do this independently at home.
No prior experience is necessary.
Liis Tedre (1976) graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in graphic arts (BA 2022). In her work, she tells playful stories through objects and forms situated on the border between figuration and abstraction. Focusing on prints on flat paper created using various techniques (primarily combining toned cyanotype and relief printing), Tedre values the sensitivity and tactility of materials, which leads her to incorporate materials and techniques that require a hands-on approach into her work.
