Tallinn Philharmonic Society, Tallinn Baroque Orchestra and Andrew Lawrence-King present: „The Masque of Time“ – a concert with poetry, song, dance-music and dancing, in the form of a 17th-century English masque.

Imagine an English royal celebration, full of ancient ritual, antique costumes, massed bands of instrumentalists, solemn words, joyful song, colourful processions, symbolic action, theatrical ballet and social dancing.

The King himself plays a leading role, transforming darkness into light: his favourite courtiers arrive disguised as ancient Roman knights or mythological heroes, their faces hidden behind armoured helmets or costume masks.

We hear echoes of Shakespeare’s plays, Italian baroque opera, and lively country dances: we see the perfect harmony of the cosmos reflected in the nobility of King and knights, the heavenly dance of sun and stars mirrored in choreographies for lords and ladies, whilst expensively engineered stage machinery creates spectacular special effects.

Ritual melts into entertainment, spectators become participants, new compositions mingle with old favourites. Everyone dances until it is time for the king to depart.
