THE VIRGIN SUICIDES: Women in Film Fest @ FOMO Cinema
Thursday 26. March at 18:30 - 20:07
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
Sofia Coppola | 1999 | USA | 1h37m | English language with English subtitles
Sofia Coppola’s debut feature presents a haunting meditation on adolescence, memory, and the mythologisation of female interiority. Structured through retrospective narration, the film reconstructs the lives of the Lisbon sisters as fragments filtered through the perceptions of those who observed them from a distance. Its narrative strategy foregrounds the instability of recollection and the impossibility of fully knowing another’s inner world.
Coppola’s restrained visual language and attention to atmosphere situate the film within a lineage of works concerned with the aesthetics of longing and loss. THE VIRGIN SUICIDES continues to resonate for its delicate balance between romanticised imagery and an underlying critique of the cultural frameworks that circumscribe female experience.
Within the context of Women in Film Week, the film occupies a more ambiguous position. It is less concerned with articulating female subjectivity than with examining how it is constructed, distorted, and ultimately misunderstood by others. Its inclusion reflects an interest in representation itself, asking not only how women are portrayed on screen, but who is doing the looking, and what remains inaccessible.
