The Pirates of Penzance is a ‘comic opera’ first produced in 1879 by librettist W.S. Gilbert and musician Arthur Sullivan and is undoubtedly their most famous work. The operetta follows a young pirate, Frederick, and his ‘Sense of Duty’ which sees him do what he thinks is right. This becomes especially hard when he detests piracy and swears that after his 21st birthday he has to exterminate the pirates that raised him. With such hits as “I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” and “Poor Wandering One” the show will put you in an all-round great mood with fantastic orchestration and silly pirate hijinks, whimsical police follies, and childish daughter antics.
