FOMO Cinema Presents: CANNES HEAT
Summer has finally arrived, so FOMO is bringing CANNES HEAT to the big screen: a week of scandalous, divisive, sexy and seductive films that shocked audiences, split critics and turned desire into cinema history.
Nicolas Winding Refn | 2016 | USA/Denmark/France | 1h58m | Presented in the original English audio with English subtitles
THE NEON DEMON drops a sixteen-year-old aspiring model into Los Angeles and lets the fashion industry circle her like fresh meat. Elle Fanning plays Jesse, a newcomer whose youth and beauty make her instantly valuable, instantly envied, and instantly vulnerable. Around her, photographers, designers, agents and rival models all seem to understand the same thing: beauty is currency, and someone always wants to cash it in.
Refn turns the modelling world into a cold, glittering horror show built from mirrors, nightclub light, dead-eyed auditions, expensive surfaces and bodies treated like objects for inspection. Beauty isn’t presented as self-expression here. It’s a market value, and Jesse’s arrival changes the price of every other model in her orbit.
When THE NEON DEMON premiered in Competition at Cannes in 2016, the reaction was hostile, fascinated and loud. The film was booed, defended, mocked and praised, often for the same reasons. Critics argued over its violence, its treatment of women, its extreme final act and whether Refn was attacking the gaze of the fashion world or simply reproducing it with better lighting.
Refn has never been shy about provocation, but THE NEON DEMON may be his most polished act of bad taste. It’s gorgeous, cruel and deliberately uncomfortable, a film that turns the pursuit of beauty into something closer to ritual sacrifice.
