THE GREEN BUTCHERS: Mads Mikkelsen Week at FOMO Cinema
Thursday 9. July at 21:15 - 22:55
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
There are movie stars, there are character actors, and then there is Mads Mikkelsen. Over three decades he has moved effortlessly between Copenhagen gangsters, priests, teachers, cannibals, Vikings, alcoholics, spies, surgeons and at least one man who cooks human beings for a living.
He has worked with Nicolas Winding Refn, Thomas Vinterberg, Susanne Bier, Anders Thomas Jensen and some of the biggest directors in international cinema, balancing arthouse cinema with global blockbusters.
For one week, FOMO is tracing that journey across eleven films. We'll start in the criminal underworld of 1990s Copenhagen, move through the dark comedies that helped define modern Danish cinema, and finish with the performances that transformed Mikkelsen into one of the defining screen presences of his generation.
Some of these films are masterpieces. Some are cult oddities. Many are both. Welcome to MADSNESS at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi
THE GREEN BUTCHERS
Anders Thomas Jensen | 2003 | Denmark | 1h40m | Danish with English subtitles
Two struggling butchers leave their jobs to open their own shop. Business is slow. Then an unfortunate accident changes everything.
Reuniting Anders Thomas Jensen with Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas, THE GREEN BUTCHERS takes the familiar ingredients of small-town comedy, workplace drama and friendship and combines them with one very significant health code violation.
Mads plays Svend, an awkward and deeply insecure butcher whose desperate need for approval manifests itself in increasingly questionable business decisions. Opposite him, Nikolaj Lie Kaas plays Bjarne, his quieter and more reluctant business partner, who slowly realises that commercial success may come with ethical compromises he hadn't anticipated.
Like much of Jensen's work, the film is populated by outsiders, misfits and deeply flawed people trying to find somewhere they belong. It balances deadpan humour, genuine warmth and one of the darkest premises in modern European comedy with remarkable confidence. It's grotesque, hilarious and unexpectedly sweet in almost equal measure.
THE GREEN BUTCHERS turns one of cinema's least appetising premises into one of Denmark's warmest comedies.
