THE DRAMA takes the polished surface of a romantic comedy and slowly turns it into something far more uncomfortable. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson play an engaged couple approaching marriage when one revelation forces both of them to reconsider what they think they know about each other.
Kristoffer Borgli has built his career around social embarrassment, public judgement and the ways people behave when their carefully maintained image begins to collapse. SICK OF MYSELF turned narcissism into grotesque comedy. DREAM SCENARIO used sudden fame to explore humiliation and cancel culture. THE DRAMA takes those same instincts into a relationship, where the stakes become more personal and much harder to escape.
What interests Borgli is judgement. How much should one terrible act define a person? What happens when private history becomes public knowledge? And how quickly do supposedly progressive, empathetic people become punitive when confronted with something they find morally unacceptable?
To me, the film’s social discomfort sits somewhere between Ruben Östlund and Thomas Vinterberg. It has the outward shape of a romantic comedy, but underneath it I think Borgli is really making a psychological drama about judgement, shame and the limits of empathy.
Zendaya and Pattinson are a large part of why the film works. Both are playing against the safety of their star images. Zendaya gives Emma vulnerability without asking the audience to excuse her, while Pattinson lets Charlie become increasingly anxious, judgmental and difficult. Their chemistry makes the central conflict more effective because the relationship initially feels entirely convincing.
THE DRAMA is also one of A24’s major releases of 2026, pairing two of the biggest actors working today with a filmmaker whose whole career has been built around making audiences uncomfortable. It’s funny in places, deeply awkward in others, and deliberately designed to leave people arguing about who they sympathise with once the lights come up.
