THE BIG BLUE is one of Luc Besson’s most romantic films, a beautiful story about friendship, obsession and the people who feel more comfortable beneath the sea than they do on land.
The film follows Jacques Mayol and Enzo Molinari, two childhood friends who grow up to become elite free divers. Their rivalry takes them across the Mediterranean as they compete to descend deeper and stay underwater longer than anyone else. Enzo treats it like sport and theatre. Jacques approaches it as something closer to a private calling.
What makes the film so distinctive is the way Besson treats the ocean. It is not simply a backdrop for the diving sequences, but an alternative world that seems more natural to Jacques than ordinary life.
Jean Reno is brilliant as Enzo. Loud, competitive, vain and completely convinced of his own importance, he brings most of the film’s humour. Jean-Marc Barr plays Jacques in almost the opposite register, detached and inward, as though part of him is always somewhere else. The contrast between them gives the film much of its charm. They compete constantly, but there is real affection underneath it.
Éric Serra’s electronic score and the underwater photography give THE BIG BLUE much of its atmosphere, but the film’s real tension comes from the difference between the two men at its centre. Enzo wants to win. Jacques seems increasingly drawn toward something beyond competition altogether. That shift gives the film its melancholy edge and turns a story about rivalry into something much more inward and existential..

Outside food is allowed in the bar but not in the cinema. No alcohol or drinks from outside are allowed. All guests are invited to arrive early and stay late!
