Workshop on dyeing textiles with plants

On September 11 at 2:00 PM, we invite you to the northern courtyard of Narva Castle to colour with plants!

Is it possible to achieve beautiful and lasting colors without modern dyes? What shades do the most common plants growing around us give? And how were yarns and fabrics dyed in the past?

During the workshop, textile researcher and heritage technologist Mari-Liis Tammiste will introduce participants to textile dyeing methods and teach the entire process - from preparing materials and plants to fixing the color. Widely available plants, such as birch leaves, heather and nettle, are used for dyeing.

Since this is a long process, be prepared to slow down and pleasantly spend three to five hours.

The workshop is of interest to anyone who is interested in textiles, traditional fabric processing techniques, environmentally friendly technologies or simply wants to try something new.

The workshop has received support from the “FABRIC” Erasmus+ project, which is dedicated to the preservation of textile heritage and textile traditions. Preserving heritage means not only preserving objects in museum collections, but also preserving the knowledge, skills and technologies that people have used for generations.

The workshop will be held in English.
