FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Richard Linklater | 1990 | USA | 1h37m | English language with English subtitles

SLACKER is presented as part of the week-long Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.

Shot for roughly 23,000 dollars on 16mm film, SLACKER announced Richard Linklater as a defining voice of American independent cinema. Made outside the studio system with a non professional cast drawn from Austin’s creative community, the film abandons conventional plot and instead drifts from character to character over the course of a single day. Conversations begin mid thought and end abruptly as the camera moves on, creating a portrait of a city alive with conspiracy theorists, artists, dreamers, and intellectual outsiders.

If you admire the loose, talk driven energy of DAZED AND CONFUSED or the philosophical intimacy of BEFORE SUNRISE, you can trace their origins here. SLACKER influenced an entire generation of filmmakers, from Kevin Smith to the mumblecore movement of the 2000s. It proved that a film did not need stars, spectacle, or a traditional narrative arc to find an audience. It only needed authenticity and a point of view.

What seems casual on the surface is carefully constructed. Linklater captures the rhythms of American youth at the end of the Cold War, when ambition felt suspect and drifting felt honest. The film helped redefine what independent cinema could look and sound like in the 1990s.

SLACKER is the blueprint for later filmmakers like Harmony Korine, Sean Baker and the Safdie Bros, all featured later on this week, who simply picked up a camera and documented the world around them without asking permission.
