SHOPLIFTERS Japanese Cinema Screening
Thursday 16. October at 17:00 - 19:00
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
Hirokazu Kore-eda’s SHOPLIFTERS won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for its delicate, heartbreaking look at family on the margins.
The Shibatas live in a cramped Tokyo apartment, scraping by through casual thefts and odd jobs. Despite poverty, they share warmth and affection, building a home out of little more than trust and necessity. When they discover a neglected young girl and bring her into their fold, their fragile balance begins to unravel. The film slowly reveals hidden truths about their relationships and the cost of their choices.
Kore-eda avoids melodrama, instead observing gestures, silences, and everyday intimacy. Shoplifters challenges viewers to rethink what family means, whether it’s defined by blood, by law, or by the simple act of caring for one another.
