About The Event:
Let's face it, clothes aren't the quality that they used to be. As a fashion industry professional, author and podcast host, even I struggled to find decently made pieces that weren't made of plastics. This is was what sparked my journey to learn to make my own wardrobe, from scratch. In that process, I realised what the biggest challenges were for beginners and how many of us dreamed of making our own clothes but gave up when we grew up.
So, I teamed up with a professional pattern cutter to make a design that you'd actually want to wear but simple enough for beginner and intermediate sewers to make. The Sewn Assembly takes out the guesswork, limiting fabric waste and importantly, the frustration that comes with wanting to bring an idea to life. With expert tailors on hand, The Sewn Assembly is an intimate, half day workshop that's a creative experience ending with a beautiful garment you can take home with you.
We'll be teaching you how to make a vintage-inspired tie-front top from 100% cotton/ linen blend. It's a mid-weight fabric with no sheerness and finished with vintage cotton-based filet lace made in Nottingham, UK. The sewing techniques you'll learn by hand and on a machine, can be taken forward. Whether you want to make more of your own wardrobe in the future or simply have the know-how to make small mends and repairs. We're so excited to start assembling with you!
About the garment
The Sunday tie-front top is made from a cotton and linen blend. The lace is sourced from a supplier of vintage Nottingham lace, which is cotton-based if not entirely so. The straps will be measured and placed with you to ensure the perfect fit on the day and there is a ribbon detail as the front closure.
FAQ
What should I bring?
All sewing materials will be provided, there's no need to bring anything. We will provide light refreshments, tea and coffee. Feel free to bring your own snacks if you have particular dietary requirements as it is a half day workshop.
How do I get the right size?
Upon purchase of a ticket, we will contact you for your desired size. The pattern is graded for S (UK 6-8), M(UK 10-12), L (UK 14-16). If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up. If you require a different size to what's available, we can accommodate this as each kit is cut to order.
Why don't you give refunds?
We're unable to accommodate refunds as each kit is cut to order and there are limited runs of textile. The fabric and the lace trim are often vintage, sourced from end of roll, deadstock and/or from small suppliers.
What if I don't finish my garment?
In a half-day workshop, it's possible to finish or come close to completing your top. We will provide the hand sewing materials for you to continue practicing your skills at home. If you would rather one of the Sewn Assembly members do it for you, we charge a £15 supplement, including UK postage.
How do I get the matching shorts?
The matching shorts can be purchased as a supplement to your top, to be completed at home. The kit will include the necessary tools needed to complete it by hand sewing, if you don't own a sewing machine. The pattern has been optimised for both methods!
How do I contact you?
Email us at [email protected] if you have further questions! We're happy to hear from you and see if we're able to help in any way.
What skill level is this suitable for?
The Sewn Assembly garments and workshop has been optimised for people who have never threaded a needle before. As it's designed for beginners and intermediate sewers, we don't expect you to come with any prior knowledge, just a lot of love (and patience) for making your own wardrobe!
Are there age restrictions?
This workshop isn't suitable for children. Older teens, 16-18+ are welcome but it's encouraged that they are accompanied by a guest who is also their parent or guardian.
