SENTIMENTAL VALUE Film Screening (ENG subs)

Sunday 28. December at 18:30 - 20:43

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Directed by Joachim Trier | Norway | 2024 | 2h13m | Presented in the original Norwegian with English subtitles.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE is a quiet but emotionally complex film about how memory can become a contested space. Joachim Trier continues his exploration of intimacy and distance as seen in his previous smash hit THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD, focusing on how relationships are shaped by time, silence, and unresolved resentment.

The film centres on two sisters and their estranged father, a once-respected filmmaker who re-enters their lives with a new project. His attempt to reconnect is framed through art, but the gesture exposes old wounds rather than healing them. What appears to be an olive branch quickly becomes a struggle over control, authorship, and emotional ownership.

Trier avoids melodrama. Conflict emerges through pauses and the silences between what's left unsaid. The film observes how people revisit the past not to understand it, but to reshape it in their favour.

At its core, SENTIMENTAL VALUE asks who gets to turn lived experience into narrative. It examines the ethics of using family as material, and the cost of prioritising artistic legacy over human connection. The title itself is ironic, pointing not only to objects but memories that also carry weight.
