WORKING GIRLS: Women In Film Fest @ FOMO Cinema
Tuesday 24. March at 19:00 - 20:32
FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi
Lizzie Borden | 1986 | USA | 1h32m | English language with English subtitles
Lizzie Borden’s WORKING GIRLS takes place almost entirely within the confines of a Manhattan brothel over the course of a single working day. Observing its protagonist’s routines with clinical precision, the film reveals the structured realities and interpersonal dynamics of a workplace often sensationalised or misunderstood. Rather than foregrounding melodrama, Borden constructs a quietly radical portrait of labour, autonomy, and economic negotiation.
Through restrained performances and an observational visual style, the film reframes the politics of representation around women’s bodies and agency. Its measured tone and refusal of moralising narratives position WORKING GIRLS as a key work in feminist independent cinema, continuing to resonate for its matter-of-fact examination of survival within systems of power and commodification.
Two weeks ago we screened Borden's BORN IN FLAMES for our Independent Film Fest. While WORKING GIRLS is considered her breakout film, its creation was actually inspired by THE sex workers Borden met during the long production process of BORN IN FLAMES.
