RESURRECTION screening at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi

Saturday 9. May at 20:30 - 23:10

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Bi Gan | 2025 | China/France | 2h39m | Presented in the original Mandarin audio with English subtitles

RESURRECTION is Bi Gan’s most ambitious film to date, a work that treats cinema itself as a haunted medium, full of dream logic, memory, mutation and return. Set in a future where humanity has surrendered the ability to dream, the film follows a dying figure moving through different identities and eras across a century of visions. That premise matters less than the way Bi uses it. This is science fiction, but of a distinctly oneiric kind, less interested in explanation than in atmosphere, metamorphosis and the strange persistence of images. Bi had already established himself with KAILI BLUES and LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. RESURRECTION pushes that project further, larger in scale, more overtly about cinema, and even more committed to the unstable border between history and hallucination.

The lore around the film is a large part of its fascination. It premiered in Competition at Cannes in 2025, where it immediately arrived as a major statement from one of the most closely watched filmmakers working in Chinese cinema. The film follows a six-act structure that moves across different styles, from silent-era pastiche to noir and spiritual allegory, culminating in an extended long take. Bi Gan belongs to that small group of contemporary directors, alongside filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, for whom form is not ornament but the substance of the work. His films keep asking what cinema can still hold, dream states, collective memory, damaged time, the afterlife of old genres, and RESURRECTION seems to have been conceived on precisely that scale.

RESURRECTION's critical reception has reflected that ambition, with strong praise for its style and imagination even from viewers who found it elusive. Whether approached as science fiction, dream film or an ode to the medium itself, RESURRECTION stands as a major new work from a director who has already become one of the essential figures in twenty-first-century art cinema.
