FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Alex Cox | 1984 | USA | 1h32m | English language with English subtitles

Alex Cox’s REPO MAN drops you straight into a version of Los Angeles where nothing quite behaves as it should. A young drifter played by Emilio Estevez stumbles into the world of car repossession, only to find himself caught between petty routines, strange conspiracies, and something far harder to explain. From the outset, the film signals that it won't follow familiar rules, using this setup as a springboard into a world that feels unpredictable, disjointed, and deliberately off-balance.

What distinguishes REPO MAN is its connection to the punk scene of the early 1980s. Cox draws directly from that culture, both in attitude and in form. The film features appearances and contributions from bands associated with the Los Angeles punk movement, including Circle Jerks, and carries the influence of labels like SST Records through its soundtrack and casting. Its stripped-down approach, rejection of polish, and embrace of contradiction align it closely with punk’s DIY ethos, positioning it as a rare example of that sensibility translated into cinema.

Although it underperformed on initial release, REPO MAN gained a following through word of mouth, midnight screenings, and home video circulation. Its reputation has grown over time, particularly among audiences drawn to 1980s counterculture, where its mix of deadpan humour, anti-authoritarian stance, and refusal to resolve its own logic continues to resonate. For viewers interested in the intersection of film and punk, it offers a direct expression of that moment, preserved without dilution.
