REAR WINDOW Hitchcock screening at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi

Friday 8. May at 18:00 - 19:50

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Alfred Hitchcock | 1954 | USA | 1h52m | Presented in the original English audio with English subtitles

REAR WINDOW turns a man stuck at home into one of the great engines of suspense in American cinema. James Stewart plays a photojournalist confined to his apartment with a broken leg during a sweltering summer, passing the time by watching the lives unfolding in the windows opposite. Hitchcock takes that stripped-down premise and builds something extraordinarily rich out of it, a thriller about murder, certainly, but also about boredom, desire, fantasy and the dangerous pleasure of looking at other people’s lives from a safe distance.

The film’s brilliance lies in its discipline. Nearly everything is organised around Jeff’s apartment and the courtyard beyond it, so distance, interruption and partial visibility become the film’s raw material. Hitchcock makes the audience share Jeff’s position, then quietly implicates us in it. We look because he looks. We infer because he infers. Grace Kelly is crucial to the film’s balance. She brings elegance, intelligence and nerve, and the dynamic between her and Stewart gives the film much of its wit and sexual charge.

REAR WINDOW is not only a murder story. It's also a film about intimacy under pressure and about how quickly curiosity can become intrusion. The film has been borrowed from endlessly because the premise is so clean, but very few later thrillers have matched the precision with which Hitchcock turns that premise into cinema. It's funny, tense, seductive and unsettling all at once, and it understands that the line between entertainment and voyeurism is thinner than most people like to admit.
