RATCATCHER is presented as part of the week-long Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.

RATCATCHER marked the arrival of Lynne Ramsay as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British cinema. Set in Glasgow during the 1973 bin strike, the film follows twelve year old James Gillespie as he drifts through a landscape of poverty, boredom, and quiet guilt after a tragic accident involving his closest friend. The story unfolds in fragments of image and memory rather than heavy exposition. Ramsay trusts silence, texture, and atmosphere over dialogue, allowing the emotional weight to accumulate slowly.

If you admire the psychological intensity of WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN or the moral unease of YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE, you can see their origins here. Even DIE MY LOVE, which FOMO screened recently, carries the same focus on interior fracture and sensory detail. Ramsay began her career as a photographer, and that eye is everywhere in RATCATCHER. The film is less concerned with plot than with lived experience, childhood isolation and the fragile boundary between escape and responsibility.

I've made RATCATCHER an essential inclusion in my INDEPENDENT FILM WEEK program because it represents independence as artistic conviction rather than financial spectacle. It only grossed approximately $888,000 worldwide during its original theatrical run, or to put it another way, RATCATCHER was more a critical success than a financial one. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, and won Best Newcomer at the BAFTAs, establishing Lynne Ramsay as a major filmmaker.

Made on a modest budget with non professional actors and shot on location, Ramsay’s debut proved that British cinema could be intimate, unsentimental, and formally bold without studio gloss.
