POINT BREAK

Kathryn Bigelow, 1991, USA, 2h02m, English with English subtitles

There are action films, and then there is POINT BREAK. Kathryn Bigelow's sun-soaked thriller is one of the defining films of the 1990s, combining spectacular action with an unexpected emotional depth that has only become more apparent with time.

Keanu Reeves stars as Johnny Utah, a former college football star turned FBI agent, who goes undercover to investigate a gang of bank robbers believed to be hiding among Southern California's surfing community. As Utah is drawn deeper into the world of charismatic surfer Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze in one of his greatest performances, the line between duty and devotion begins to blur.

On its surface, POINT BREAK delivers everything you'd want from a Hollywood action film: bank robberies, foot chases, skydiving, surfing and some of the most exhilarating practical stunt work ever put on screen. But Bigelow, who would later become the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director with The Hurt Locker, is interested in something deeper. Beneath the spectacle lies a film about obsession, masculinity, freedom and the seductive pull of a life lived without compromise.

Reeves gives one of the performances that defined his career. His natural sincerity makes Johnny Utah's transformation entirely believable, while his chemistry with Swayze elevates the film far beyond the conventions of the buddy cop thriller. Their relationship is built on admiration, rivalry and mutual recognition, giving POINT BREAK an emotional charge that has helped it endure for more than three decades.

Frequently imitated but never equalled, POINT BREAK remains one of the great American action films. It's thrilling, funny, unexpectedly moving and endlessly rewatchable. Whether you're discovering it for the first time or returning for the tenth, there's no better way to experience it than with a packed cinema.
