Can you actually learn anything while you sleep — and what does the brain really need sleep for?
Friday 19. December at 19:00 - 21:00
Leap 7RIOS - Centro de Escritórios, Lisboa
19 December at 19:00 in Lisbon, science journalist and popular science communicator Asya Kazantseva will give a lecture on whether it is possible to learn anything while you sleep — and what the brain actually needs sleep for. 🌙
Special guest of the evening — biologist Alexander Panchin.
We grew up on fantasies about sleep-learning, from Huxley to the Strugatskys. But what does modern science say? Why doesn’t a textbook under your pillow help — while a good night's sleep after studying is absolutely essential? And is it possible to influence memory processes during sleep to make them more effective?
We will discuss:
— How the brain “replays” new information during sleep and why proper learning is impossible without this process.
— Whether new knowledge can be inserted into the brain during sleep — and why this is nearly impossible without electrodes.
— How scientists are trying to gently enhance memory during sleep using smells, sounds, and various types of stimulation.
— Why sleep remains the best tool for consolidating knowledge — and what future research might make possible.
We’ll talk about which ideas about “sleep-learning” belong in science fiction — and which surprisingly align with neuroscience.
After the lecture:
— Q&A session
— Book signing and the opportunity to purchase books by Asya Kazantseva
— Photos with the speakers — an evening you’ll definitely remember (and one that will consolidate well in your sleep).
When: 19 December at 19:00
Where: Leap 7RIOS – Centro de Escritórios
The lecture will be held in Russian.
About the speaker:
Asya Kazantseva is a well-known science journalist, laureate of the “Prosvetitel” award, author of four bestselling books about the human brain and behavior, and a travelling lecturer. She holds degrees in neurobiology (St. Petersburg State University), cognitive sciences (HSE University), and molecular neurobiology (University of Bristol).
We look forward to seeing you at this fascinating event!
