Marjane Satrapi | 2007 | France Iran | 96 minutes | original French audio with English subtitles
PERSEPOLIS is an animated autobiographical film that follows Marjane, a young girl growing up during and after the Iranian Revolution. As the Islamic Republic tightens its control, her childhood is shaped by war, repression, and ideological pressure. Eventually she is able to escape France, where exile brings its own form of alienation.
The film sits within the third wave of Iranian cinema in exile. Animation allows Satrapi to depict violence, trauma, and memory in ways that would be impossible inside Iran. The black and white style reflects both personal recollection and political starkness.
PERSEPOLIS was controversial in Iran for its open criticism of the regime and was banned for domestic screening. Internationally, it became one of the most widely seen films about modern Iranian history. It does an amazing job of presenting the consequences of theocratic rule visible through the director's personal lived experience, rather than abstract politics.
