PARIS IS BURNING
Jennie Livingston | 1990 | UK/USA | 1h18m | Presented in the original English audio with English subtitles
PARIS IS BURNING opens the door to a world that mainstream culture spent years borrowing from.
Shot in New York in the late 1980s, Jennie Livingston’s documentary enters the city’s ballroom scene, where Black and Latino queer and trans communities built their own systems of style, status, family, competition, and survival. The film introduces houses, balls, categories, voguing, reading, realness, and the chosen families that gave people structure when the outside world offered rejection or worse.
What makes PARIS IS BURNING endure is the clarity of its subjects. Dorian Corey, Pepper LaBeija, Venus Xtravaganza, Willi Ninja, Angie Xtravaganza, and others speak with humour, intelligence, ambition, sadness, and absolute command of their own image. The film never reduces ballroom culture to spectacle. It shows performance as social code, protection, fantasy, and critique.
The documentary has become essential to the history of queer cinema, fashion, dance, drag, and pop culture. Its influence is everywhere, from music videos to reality television to the language people now use without knowing where it came from. it captures joy and invention, but also poverty, racism, homophobia, violence, and the cost of wanting to be seen by a world refuses to accept you.
