PARASITE (2019)

We’ve shown quite a bit of Bong Joon-ho at FOMO recently, including MOTHER and MEMORIES OF MURDER last month. Since then, several Film Club members and guests have asked the same question: when are you showing PARASITE?
So here we are.
PARASITE won Best Picture, but that makes it sound far more respectable than it actually is. Bong Joon-ho’s film begins as a very funny con movie, follows a struggling family gradually inserting themselves into the household of a wealthy couple, and then starts changing shape in ways that are best left unspoiled.
That ability to shift tone is one of the film’s great pleasures, while the architecture serves just as much importance as the plot. The wealthy Park family live in an immaculate modernist house high above the city, while the Kim family live in a cramped semi-basement below street level. Bong keeps moving his characters up and down stairs, hills and levels, turning physical space into a constant reminder of who has money, who does not, and how difficult it is to move between those worlds.
It's also much funnier than its reputation as a major awards winner might suggest. Before the film turns brutal, Bong gives us a long stretch of precise comic deception, family teamwork and increasingly elaborate improvisation.
PARASITE became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, alongside Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature. But the awards are not why I'm showing it.

REFUND & CREDIT POLICY: If FOMO cancels a screening, all ticket holders will receive a full refund. If your plans change and you can no longer attend, we’ll issue you a credit for the value of your ticket, which can be used for any FOMO film screening within the following 30 days.
