“U Are the Universe” — One-Time Screening in Tallinn

Saturday 24. January at 12:30 - 14:30

"Sõprus" Cinema, Tallinn

The Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia invites Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine to a special screening of the science-fiction film “U Are the Universe”, taking place on January 24 at 12:30 at Sõprus Cinema, dedicated to the Day of Unity of Ukraine.

🎥About the film

“U Are the Universe” is a tragicomic story about loneliness, hope, and love that overcomes unimaginable distances.
The film has captured the hearts of both audiences and critics, attracting over 323,000 viewers and earning 59.9 million UAH during its first 8 weeks in cinemas.

It has been recognized as the Best Ukrainian Fiction Film of 2025 and ranks among the top five highest-grossing films in the history of Ukrainian cinema.

But behind these numbers lies much more than commercial success.

This is a film that warms you when the world feels dark, and it resonates especially strongly today — at a time when Ukraine is living through war, loss, and an ongoing struggle for its future.

🚀 Plot

In the future, Ukrainian space trucker Andriy Melnyk is on a routine mission, transporting radioactive waste away from Earth. He is not entirely alone: his only companion aboard the ship is Maksym, an onboard computer — ironic, caring, and surprisingly human.

Suddenly, Earth explodes.
Andriy becomes, most likely, the last living human in the Universe.

Loneliness, silence, the cold of space — and an unexpected radio connection with Catherine, a French scientist. They are separated by millions of kilometers and hours of signal delay, yet something real begins to grow between them: conversations, jokes, memories, fears — and hope.
Hope to meet.
Hope not to be alone.

This is not a story about technology.
It is a story about a human being who, even at the edge of the Universe, longs for love, warmth, and meaning.

💙💛 Why this film matters today

Many viewers describe “U Are the Universe” as a powerful metaphor for Ukraine during the war: a story of isolation, loss, and life after catastrophe — but also of resilience, humor, and the ability to love even when it feels like the world has collapsed.

Despite its science-fiction setting, the film is deeply human and sincere. It offers a sense of warmth, support, and inner light.
This film does not pressure — it embraces.

🎶 Music that echoes through space

One of the film’s unique strengths is its use of Ukrainian music, звучить in the open cosmos.
Songs performed by Diana Petrynenko, Mykola Hnatiuk, Nazariy Yaremchuk, VIA “Smerichka”, VIA “Kalyna”, and other beloved classics create a striking contrast between the vastness of space and the idea of home that lives in memory.

✨ A festival and audience favorite

The directorial debut of Pavlo Ostrikov is tender, bold, and profoundly human. The film received standing ovations at international festivals, warm critical reviews, and became a true audience favorite.

Its world premiere took place in September 2024 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The production took over 7 years and was created as a co-production between Ukraine (ForeFilms) and Belgium.
