Evening House tours at the Museum of the Under and Tuglas Literary Institute

To celebrate the anniversary year of the Museum of the Under and Tuglas Literary Institute, monthly evening house tours will take place from September to December. During the tours, visitors will hear stories about the writers’ lives in their Nõmme home and listen to readings from their works, see intriguing objects from the institute’s collections, and explore the rooms where some of the great figures of Estonian literature once spent their time. Visitors will also get a glimpse behind the scenes of the museum’s research work and learn about the projects currently underway.

Marie Under and Artur Adson lived in the house at 12 Väikese Illimari Street from 1933 to 1944, before fleeing to Sweden during the Second World War. After the war, having lost their own residence to the war, Friedebert and Elo Tuglas moved into the building, where they remained until their deaths. In 1971, the Friedebert Tuglas House Museum was established, and it opened to visitors in 1976. The museum houses treasures from the book, photograph, manuscript, and art collections of Friedebert and Elo Tuglas; the legacy of Artur Adson and Marie Under, particularly from their years in exile; the art collection of the Estonian Cultural Foundation in the United States; and the cultural collection of art and literary critic Paul Reets. The house and its garden have retained their intimate and homely character, creating the feeling that the writer has merely stepped out for a walk, leaving a pen and inkwell on the desk, waiting for the next line to be written.

The tours in Estonian will take place on 7 September, 6 October and 11 December at 17.00.

The tour in English will take place on 4 November at 17.00.

Tours will last approximately one hour.
