NOUVELLE VAGUE is screening at FOMO Secret Cinema as part of our weekly program of new films by major contemporary directors.
NOUVELLE VAGUE dramatises the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s BREATHLESS in 1959 Paris. We follow Godard as a young critic trying to become a director, working from a brief treatment by François Truffaut and trying to turn a low-budget crime idea into something new. The film shows him clashing with his producer, testing the patience of his crew, and improvising scenes on the streets with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg.
Linklater recreates the world around Cahiers du Cinéma, Cannes, and the cafés where these filmmakers argued about what cinema should be. We see the shoot fall behind schedule, Godard doubting himself, and collaborators who do not yet realise they are making a film that will change cinema history. The editing of the jump cuts, the tension around the ending, and the final screening of BREATHLESS all appear inside the story.
NOUVELLE VAGUE is both a behind-the-scenes drama and a love letter to the French New Wave. It will appeal to anyone curious about how radical films are actually made, and how much uncertainty, ego, risk, and instinct sit behind a so-called “classic”.

How to find FOMO: Enter the Bazari via Atoneli St above Carrefour and take the stairs immediately on your left behind the jewellery stand. The cinema entrance is one flight up in the stairwell.
