Two Special Days in Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie with Mikhail Maizuls

Saints and Sinners: How Medieval Art “Works”

The Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, with its vast collection, is the perfect place to explore the “language” of medieval imagery.

How did artists construct hierarchies among characters and convey their speech without words? Why are some figures monumental, while others are barely visible? How were the righteous and the wicked, Christians and non-believers, set in opposition?

We will explore what changed in the 15th century and what made the innovations of the great Flemish masters — Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and of course Hieronymus Bosch — so groundbreaking.

We will read inscriptions on German altarpieces, examine imaginary architecture, look closely at the unsettling faces of Christ’s executioners and saints, count crowns and halos, study the gifts of the Magi, and find out how and why Lucas Cranach copied Bosch.
