KNIFE+HEART turns a late-1970s queer film set into a murder mystery lit by grief, obsession, and neon.
Set in Paris in 1979, the film follows Anne, a producer of low-budget blue movies, played by the incredible Vanessa Paradis. She’s trying to recover from a breakup with Loïs, her editor and former lover, while keeping her chaotic production company moving. Then her actors begin to die under strange and violent circumstances, and the world of the films she makes starts to bleed into the crime story surrounding her.
Yann Gonzalez builds KNIFE+HEART from giallo, slasher cinema, melodrama, and queer underground culture. The result is stylish, sad, funny, and genuinely strange. It treats genre as something elastic, allowing desire, grief, camp, and danger to occupy the same frame without cancelling each other out.
Vanessa Paradis gives Anne a bruised, unstable glamour. She’s ridiculous at times, wounded at others, and far more moving than the film’s pulpy surface first suggests. The M83 score pushes everything deeper into dream logic, turning Paris into a place of smoke, coloured light, bad decisions, and beautiful people behaving terribly.
KNIFE+HEART is ideal for anyone who likes their thrillers messy, queer, stylish, and slightly deranged. So, yes, very FOMO.
