EAGLE VS SHARK is a low key romance about two misfits who drift toward each other with hesitation and clumsy charm. Lily works at a burger shop and spends her days watching people pass her by. Jarrod is a self important outsider who turns every slight into a personal mission. When they meet at a costume party, a strange and fragile connection begins.

Waititi builds the film through small details. Awkward silences. Flat jokes. Sudden emotional shifts. The humour feels gentle rather than cruel. The performances stay understated and give the story a quiet sincerity that lingers. You can see the early shape of Waititi’s later themes here like loneliness and family fractures and people trying to belong.

EAGLE VS SHARK is a snapshot of early New Zealand indie cinema and an important step in Waititi’s career. Anyone who enjoys character focused comedy will find something honest and warm in it.
