NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) Film Screening

Saturday 22. November at 18:30 - 20:05

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

Charles Laughton | USA | 1955 | English with English subtitles

Robert Mitchum plays Reverend Harry Powell, a travelling preacher who marries a young widow to steal the money hidden by her deceased husband. Her children know where the money is and become his real targets. Their eventual escape turns the story into a frightening fairy tale, filled with hymns, whispers, and the famous LOVE and HATE tattoos on Powell’s hands.

Laughton uses bold shadows, strange angles, and rural hymns to create a world that feels both biblical and nightmarish. Lillian Gish appears as a tough, protective guardian who takes the children in and stands up to Powell’s violence.

NIGHT OF THE HUNTER was hardly a success on release, yet critics later recognised it as one of the great American films of the 1950s and a key influence on modern thrillers.
