MEN AND CHICKEN: Mads Mikkelsen Week at FOMO Cinema

Thursday 9. July at 19:00 - 20:44

FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi

There are movie stars, there are character actors, and then there is Mads Mikkelsen. Over three decades he has moved effortlessly between Copenhagen gangsters, priests, teachers, cannibals, Vikings, alcoholics, spies, surgeons and at least one man who cooks human beings for a living.

He has worked with Nicolas Winding Refn, Thomas Vinterberg, Susanne Bier, Anders Thomas Jensen and some of the biggest directors in international cinema, balancing arthouse cinema with global blockbusters.

For one week, FOMO is tracing that journey across eleven films. We'll start in the criminal underworld of 1990s Copenhagen, move through the dark comedies that helped define modern Danish cinema, and finish with the performances that transformed Mikkelsen into one of the defining screen presences of his generation.

Some of these films are masterpieces. Some are cult oddities. Many are both. Welcome to MADSNESS at FOMO Cinema Tbilisi

MEN AND CHICKEN

Anders Thomas Jensen | 2015 | Denmark | 1h44m | Danish with English subtitles

There are family dramas, there are black comedies, and then there is MEN & CHICKEN.

Following the death of the man they believed to be their father, two socially maladjusted brothers set out to find their biological family and arrive at an isolated sanatorium inhabited by several equally peculiar men who may or may not be their siblings.

Revealing much more than that would be doing you an injustice I promise!

Reuniting Mads Mikkelsen with longtime collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen, MEN & CHICKEN continues the director's fascination with damaged men, inherited trauma and the strange ways families hold themselves together. The difference here is that Jensen pushes those ideas further than ever before, into territory that is by turns grotesque, hilarious and unexpectedly moving.

Mads delivers one of the funniest performances of his career as Elias, a socially awkward compulsive masturbator with a hair-trigger temper, a nervous tic and very questionable social skills.

Somehow, against all available evidence, MEN & CHICKEN eventually becomes a genuinely touching film about loneliness, belonging and the families we inherit versus the ones we choose.

Some films are impossible to recommend without sounding insane. MEN & CHICKEN is one of them.
