James Vanderbilt | 2025 | Hungary/USA | 2h28m with 10minute intermission | English language with English subtitles

James Vanderbilt’s NUREMBERG is set in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, as the Allied powers prepare to prosecute leading figures of the Nazi regime. Rather than treating the trials only as courtroom spectacle, the film narrows its focus to the uneasy psychological contest between U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelley and Hermann Göring, positioning questions of charisma, denial, culpability, and self-mythologising at the centre of the drama.

What gives the film its force is its attention to performance in both senses of the word. Göring is presented not simply as a defendant but as a man still attempting to shape the narrative around himself, while Kelley’s role requires him to examine a personality that is at once theatrical, manipulative, and historically monstrous. This allows the film to move beyond procedural reconstruction and into more difficult territory, asking how evil presents itself when stripped of uniform, ceremony, and power.

Russell Crowe and Rami Malek anchor the film’s central opposition, with Michael Shannon also appearing as chief prosecutor Robert H. Jackson. Based on Jack El-Hai’s book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, the film approaches the Nuremberg trials through interrogation, observation, and moral confrontation, using the postwar setting to consider not only punishment but the challenge of making atrocity legible within legal and historical form.
