Edgar Wright | 2017 | UK/USA | 1h53m | Presented in the original English audio with English subtitles
BABY DRIVER is 50% crime film, 50% car film, and 1000% music film all at once. It follows a young getaway driver who moves through Atlanta with the music cranking and every decision keyed to a song. In lesser hands that might have been a neat hook and nothing more. Edgar Wright turns it into the logic of the entire film. The chases, the edits, the footwork, the gunshots, and even the movement in the background are all locked to the soundtrack with obsessive precision. This is essentially a mixtape on wheels, but one built with real formal control from a master director than just surface cool.
Wright had carried the idea for years, and you can feel that long gestation in the finished film. He wrote and directed it himself, with Ansel Elgort in the lead and a cast that includes Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eiza González and Kevin Spacey. Ansel Elgort's lead Baby suffers from tinnitus. Music is how he concentrates, how he manages the noise of the world, and how the film itself finds its rhythm. Wright doesn’t lay songs over finished scenes. He constructs the scenes around them from the start, which is why the whole thing feels so tight.
The opening getaway set to “Bellbottoms” is one of the great opening scenes of the last 20 years. It announced the film’s whole method in a few exhilarating minutes. In the original marketing campaign, that sequence did a huge amount of the work. Rather than relying on a conventional trailer alone, the film was sold through the sheer force of its opening minutes, and you could feel immediately that Wright had made something with its own pulse.
Today, BABY DRIVER still holds up as one of the clearest examples of a director using popular cinema to make something stylish, exact and unmistakably his own.
