SPECIAL EVENT: DIRTY HARRY

With film curator and critic Ilya Parkhomenko

Screening followed by a live audience discuss

Don Siegel, 1971, USA, 1h42m, English audio and subtitles, with film discussion in English

When people think of Clint Eastwood, they often picture the same man: quiet, squinting, armed, and unwilling to play by the rules. DIRTY HARRY didn't create that image, but it may be the film that made it inseparable from him.

By 1971, Eastwood had already shaped this screen persona through Sergio Leone's westerns. Director Don Siegel brought that frontier figure into modern San Francisco and placed him inside a police department constrained by laws and procedures. The result is one of the defining American thrillers of the 1970s: lean, uncompromising and endlessly influential.

Harry Callahan is efficient, charismatic and unforgettable, but he's also deeply unsettling. He's a man convinced his own sense of justice should stand above the system. More than fifty years later, DIRTY HARRY remains provocative because it refuses to offer easy answers. Does it celebrate Harry's methods, or quietly expose how dangerous they are?

Following the screening, film curator and critic Ilya Parkhomenko will lead a live audience discussion exploring how DIRTY HARRY cemented Clint Eastwood's iconic screen character, the influence of the western on Harry Callahan, Don Siegel's masterful direction, and why the film continues to spark debate about policing, violence, masculinity and justice more than half a century after its release.
