Join us for an evening with Rusty Snyder as he presents his new ebook Flash Fiction and Poems from Finland. After 34 years of living in a country crowned the “Happiest in the World” eight years in a row, Rusty offers a perspective that goes beyond the headlines. Finland may top global rankings, yet its happiness is quiet, resilient, and often hidden beneath a reserved exterior.
In this collection of short stories and poems, inspired by life between 1982 and 2016, you’ll step into everyday Finnish moments: at home and at work, in saunas and pubs, on forest paths and open roads. Through flashes of comedy, irony, tenderness, and the occasional existential spiral, the book explores friendship and solitude, love and heartbreak, joy and melancholy — the full spectrum of human experience, Finnish-style.
During the launch, Rusty will read selected pieces from the collection, followed by an open discussion about life in Finland — the myths, the contradictions, and the subtle beauty of a culture that values silence as much as sincerity.
