Beautiful lakes, an old castle on a cliff, sweet chocolate towns, and mountains that look almost too pretty to be real. In one day, we will visit three of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. Each place has its own story and its own charm.
RADOVLJICA
We start in Radovljica, a small medieval town also known as "Sweet Radol'ca." You can walk along old cobbled streets past colourful houses. The town still has an old moat, one of the last in Slovenia.
Radovljica is famous for chocolate. It hosts the biggest chocolate festival in the country, and its chocolate history goes back more than 100 years. At the Lectar workshop, you can watch people make traditional honeybread hearts by hand, using wooden moulds that are generations old. Long ago, people gave these hearts as a sign of love. You can enjoy a coffee, try some chocolate, and explore the old town before we continue.
BLED
Next we visit Lake Bled, the most famous lake in Slovenia. A small island sits in the middle of the lake, and above it stands Bled Castle, the oldest castle in the country, built over 1,000 years ago.
You can reach the island by a traditional "pletna" boat, rowed by a local boatman, or you can walk the path around the lake at your own pace. For the best view, many visitors hike up to the Osojnica viewpoints on the hills above the water, a short but somewhat steep walk that rewards you with the classic postcard view of the lake, the island, and the castle all together.
Before you leave, try kremna rezina, the famous Bled cream cake. It has layers of flaky puff pastry, vanilla cream, and custard, all topped with a dusting of icing sugar. The recipe was created here in 1953 and has barely changed since, and it is now so closely tied to this place that it carries official protected status: an authentic Bled cream cake can only be made here. You will find it in almost every café around the lake.
BOHINJ
We end the day at Slovenia's largest natural lake. It was formed by a glacier during the last Ice Age and lies inside Triglav National Park, one of the oldest national parks in Europe. Bohinj is quieter than Lake Bled, but just as beautiful. Its turquoise water reflects the Julian Alps like a mirror. Locals have an old saying about the lake: "It holds no more water than a bucket — if the bucket is big enough."
