KEN TÄSTÄ KÄY… – Blind Cinema Experience

KEN TÄSTÄ KÄY… is the second solo album by Pauliina Kauppila, inspired by the history of Finnish psychiatry, particularly the women's mental hospital on the island of Seili (1889–1962), the position of women at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the ways these histories continue to resonate today. The work explores structural inequality, the stigma surrounding psychiatry, and beliefs related to the body, inviting audiences to reflect on how attitudes of the past continue to shape contemporary society.

Musically, the album is an experimental, narrative-driven work that combines voice, percussion, and improvisation with field recordings from both everyday and unexpected soundscapes—from an MRI scanner and the rhythm of a train to the dining bell of Seili. Drawing inspiration from Finnish folk music as well as the aesthetics of David Lynch, Brian Eno, Kaija Saariaho, and Arvo Pärt, the album creates a distinctive sound world that transcends genre boundaries.

Pauliina Kauppila is a theatrical percussionist, composer, and adolescent psychiatrist. Her artistic practice brings together music, the history of psychiatry, and social issues. KEN TÄSTÄ KÄY… invites audiences to pause within an inner landscape of the mind and reflect on the stories that society has too often left untold.
