THE CABLE GUY
Ben Stiller, 1996, USA, 1h36m, English language with English subtitles
The first $20 million performance in Hollywood history wasn't a superhero, an action hero, or an Oscar winner. It was Jim Carrey playing a deeply troubled cable installer.
Released at the height of his comedy superstardom, THE CABLE GUY confused audiences expecting another ACE VENTURA or THE MASK. Instead, Carrey delivers one of the darkest performances of his career, playing an obsessive cable installer who forces his way into the life of an unsuspecting customer with increasingly bizarre consequences.
Ben Stiller surrounds Carrey with a spectacular collection of supporting actors including Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann and Jack Black. The comedy's broad, awkward and frequently hilarious, but there's always something unsettling underneath it. Chip can make you laugh, make you uncomfortable, and make you reconsider ever letting a stranger into your apartment.
Audiences didn't quite know what to make of THE CABLE GUY in 1996. Over time, its reputation has completely changed. It's now recognised as one of the boldest, darkest and most unusual studio comedies of the decade
