INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009)
Quentin Tarantino | 2009 | USA/Germany | 2h33m | presented in the original English with English subtitles
In INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, cinema becomes a weapon.
Quentin Tarantino takes the machinery of movies, a theatre, a projector, reels of film, and turns them into the centrepiece of an alternate-history revenge fantasy. It's one of his clearest declarations of how powerful he thinks cinema can be, taken to its most literal extreme.
The film follows several intersecting stories in Nazi-occupied France. A group of Jewish-American soldiers hunt German troops behind enemy lines. A young cinema owner quietly plans revenge of her own. A British officer is drawn into an undercover operation that depends almost entirely on language, behaviour and the ability to convincingly play a part.
That last element matters because for all its violence, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is built around conversation.
The farmhouse opening, the basement tavern sequence and the restaurant scenes are all long stretches of people talking while everyone in the room, and everyone watching, knows that one wrong word or gesture could be fatal. Tarantino stretches those encounters almost to breaking point.
It is also one of his most ambitious ensemble films. Mélanie Laurent, Diane Kruger, Michael Fassbender, Daniel Brühl and Brad Pitt all get distinct sections of the story, which gradually converge around the same movie theatre.
And then there is Christoph Waltz.
Before INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, Waltz was largely unknown to international audiences. His performance as Colonel Hans Landa changed that almost overnight. Charming, funny, multilingual and terrifying, he dominates every room he enters and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The opening scene alone explains why.
