PROJECT HAIL MARY is big, expensive studio science fiction made with real conviction. Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel by Drew Goddard, it starts with a strong hook: a schoolteacher wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there, and gradually pieces together the fact that he may be Earth’s last chance.
What makes the film work is that it doesn’t treat science as set dressing. Much like Andy Weir and Ridley Scott's earlier collaboration on THE MARTIAN, the whole HAIL MARY PROJECT story depends on curiosity, problem-solving and the pleasure of watching a character think his way through impossible conditions. That has always been part of Andy Weir’s appeal, and it carries over here. Lord and Miller keep the scale large, but the film’s real engine is how Ryan Gosling in the lead balances cosmic threat with human ingenuity. He's really great in this.
The film has set the box office on fire across the world. The first trailer became the most-viewed week trailer for an original movie globally, and the release itself was Amazon MGM’s biggest opening weekend to date. As of late April, it has passed $600 million worldwide, making it one of the year’s major commercial hits. This is crowd-pleasing science fiction that still believes intelligence can be cinematic.
