EN LA ARDIENTE OSCURIDAD TICKETS

 Estaís envenenados de alegría.

You are all poisoned with happiness.

A play about blindness and an alienated protagonist, written against the backcloth of censorship. En La Ardiente Oscuridad by Antonio Buero Vallejo is as much a historical allegory as a universal story “cargada de futuro” (“loaded with future”).

Set in an almost dystopian “moderno centro de enseñanza” (“modern teaching centre“) for the visually impaired, the story follows the arrival of Ignacio, who, although blind like his classmates, is seen to be different because he carries a cane. Over time, he begins to destabilise the value of “moral de acero” (“will of steel”) cherished by the centre and plants seeds of doubt in the people around him. How will an institution so seemingly upbeat and impregnable withstand the rupture of an entire ideology, and what toll will it take on the students?

The Edinburgh University Spanish Society, along with the Department of Literatures, Language and Cultures of the University of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival, present one of the great Hispanic works of the twentieth century, In the Burning Darkness.

Performed in Spanish with English subtitles.
