DRAPING — Bringing Movement into Garments from a Single Piece of Linen with Katarina Rimarcikova
Wednesday 3. June at 18:00 - 21:00
MAISON SHIFT, Zürich
Shape fabric into flowing, timeless silhouettes and discover linen in a new way. Learn draping techniques and develop high quality garments with a clear design language.
This workshop is for design minded and creative individuals who want to explore the potential of draping with linen. Working directly on the dress form, garments emerge through shaping, folding, and draping, resulting in pieces that feel both contemporary and timeless. Katarina brings extensive experience in draping and design and shares her own developed techniques. The focus is on a playful approach guided by deliberate constraints that lead to precise and compelling results.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of draping through a live demonstration and learn three to four characteristic techniques. You will explore how fabric can be shaped with minimal intervention. Using 1.5 to 3 metres of fabric, you will design and drape your own top or dress. You will work within clearly defined parameters, using a maximum of two seams, targeted cuts, and no additional fabric pieces. This reduction sharpens your understanding of material and form and supports a refined and high quality outcome. The garments are assembled with basting and key seams are completed during the workshop.
The workshop is open and exploratory, yet clearly structured, guiding you step by step towards a cohesive result.
Katarina begins with an introduction to her working methods and design approach, followed by a draping demonstration. You then work on your own design with continuous guidance. The workshop concludes with a group presentation and reflection on the pieces created.
