Performers
Fortunato Salvador García Piquer (piano, Spain)
Description
On May 23, as part of the Iberofest festival, Spanish pianist Fortunato Salvador García Piquer will once again perform at the Arvo Pärt Centre. This time, his solo concert is dedicated to the music of Manuel de Falla in celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Falla, one of Spain’s most influential 20th-century composers, blends folk traditions with a refined, modern musical
language. The program also features works by Frédéric Chopin, bringing elegance, brilliance, and virtuosity to the piano.
The recital opens with the piano arrangement of El amor brujo, a suite born from Falla’s ballet. The work tells a story of love, jealousy, and the supernatural, moving from the mysterious Canción del Fuego Fatuo to the dark Danza del Terror, and culminating in the fiery Danza del Fuego. With its dramatic tension, vivid rhythms, and evocative colors, the suite creates a captivating musical journey. It is followed by the Serenata Andaluza, a lyrical and romantic piece that evokes the warmth and elegance of southern Spain, with delicate melodies and subtle harmonies reflecting Falla’s sensitivity to Andalusian traditions.
From this gentle lyricism, the music moves to the Fantasía Bética, a dazzling exploration of rhythm and color, this work features percussive textures, shifting accents, and intricate patterns, capturing the vitality and spirit of Falla’s musical landscape.
The recital concludes with two masterpieces of Romantic virtuosity by Frédéric Chopin: the sparkling Waltz in A-flat major, Op. 34 No. 1 and the dramatic Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 31, combining elegance, brilliance, and emotional intensity to provide a luminous finale.
