I WANT YOUR SEX marks Gregg Araki’s return to feature filmmaking after ten years away, and he comes back with exactly the kind of provocative, funny and sexually charged film you would expect from a stalwart of indie queer cinema.
Cooper Hoffman plays Elliot, a directionless twenty-something who lands a job working for celebrated artist Erika Tracey, played by Olivia Wilde. Their professional relationship quickly becomes sexual, and Araki uses that setup to explore desire, power, consent, art and the very messy gap between what people think they want and what actually happens when they get it.
Araki emerged from the New Queer Cinema movement and has spent his career making films about young people, sex, alienation and people behaving badly. THE LIVING END, THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE and MYSTERIOUS SKIN all pushed against the polite boundaries of American independent cinema. I WANT YOUR SEX feels very much connected to that earlier work, but it also has the perspective of a filmmaker returning to a culture that has changed enormously around questions of sexuality and acceptable behaviour.
Olivia Wilde is fantastic here. Erika is charismatic, intimidating, funny and completely convinced of her own importance. Wilde commits fully to the role, while Hoffman gives her a perfect counterweight as a young man who spends much of the film trying to work out whether he is living through the greatest experience of his life or making a catastrophic series of decisions.
The supporting cast is also ridiculously good. Charli XCX, Margaret Cho, Johnny Knoxville, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Daveed Diggs and longtime Araki collaborator James Duval all appear. The result feels less like a respectable prestige drama and more like Araki has invited a very particular group of people into a room and encouraged everyone to misbehave.
Sure, it's explicit. This is after all Araki we're talking about. But it's also very funny. And lurking underneath all of that is a director asking serious questions about who gets to define the rules of a sexual relationship and how easily liberation can become another form of power.

After the screening, head upstairs to the rooftop for a special interactive sound performance by international sound artist Daeli Yi from South Korea. Daeli has performed at international art festivals and biennales across Asia and Europe, and we're pleased to announce he'll be doing a FREE performance requiring audience participation this Sunday. This show will commence 20:00 followed by a rooftop DJ set at 21:00.

FOOD AND DRINK POLICY: SHEREKILEBI Bar in FOMO Secret Cinema opens 1 hour before the first screening of the day and closes at 01:30, serving a wide selection of beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic refreshments including coffee and tea, as well as fresh hot popcorn! Outside food is allowed in the bar but not in the cinema. No alcohol or drinks from outside are allowed. All guests are invited to arrive early and stay late!
