UNDER THE SILVER LAKE is presented as part of the week-long Music Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi.
UNDER THE SILVER LAKE is a sun-bleached neo-noir drifting through Los Angeles like a paranoid fever dream. Andrew Garfield plays Sam, an unemployed drifter who becomes obsessed with the sudden disappearance of a woman he barely knows. His investigation pulls him through secret societies, underground zines and coded messages hidden in pop culture.
Music is central to the film’s design. Composer Disasterpeace weaves an eerie score that nods to Bernard Herrmann, while the film obsessively explores the idea that pop songs contain hidden messages planted by unseen architects of culture. There is even a scene built around the myth that a single songwriter secretly wrote the greatest hits of the 20th century. Mitchell uses music as conspiracy, mythology and manipulation, asking who really controls the soundtrack of our lives.
This is a film about obsession and about decoding the cultural noise around us, about what happens when you start listening too closely.
