'How to sauna the Estonian way' is a weekly exploration of sauna culture in Estonia and how it has developed through the ages - followed by the opportunity to enjoy a good sauna and try Estonian food and drink.

We'll start by discussing ancient sweat culture and its earliest origins here among Finno-Ugric peoples and finally look at why the sauna is still revered to this day in modern Estonia. Along the way, we'll also look at old beliefs, new science, and interesting traditions.

The event is aimed at visitors to Estonia who may have never tried an Estonian sauna before, but everyone is welcome and we do find that Estonians also learn some surprising facts and make a great contribution to the discussion. Feel free to come on your own too as the sauna is the best place in Estonia to get to know people.

The event takes place every Saturday (starting in May) at Heldeke! - a new underground theatre and bar that is also home to Tallinn's coolest sauna (although not literally). It's located in the vibrant community of Kalamaja, a short stroll from the Old Town. The venue itself has its own colourful and controversial place in sauna history, which we'll discuss. The sauna has 'home rules', which means swimming clothes are optional and women are welcome to go in separately when they wish. The bar is well stocked with interesting Estonian drinks you are welcome to purchase, including a wide selection of alcohol-free options, while food is already included in the ticket.

Tickets: €20
What's included: Discussion, sauna, light meal.
What to bring: Swim suit (optional), a towel (or just message us in advance if you need to borrow one)
What else: We'll make sure you drink lots of water, but there's also a cash bar for drinks.

Anni and Adam have travelled around Estonia and beyond together to find weird and wonderful saunas - while writing a book about Estonian sauna culture. Along the way, they opened a smoke sauna in Tallinn, competed in Estonia's sauna marathons, organised pop-up sauna events, and became the first people to both start a company while having a sauna and vote in national elections while having a sauna.
