HOPE

Na Hong-jin | 2026 | South Korea | 2h36m | Presented in the original Korean and English audio with English subtitles.

Ten years after THE WAILING, Na Hong-jin returns with an alien-invasion epic full of high-speed pursuits, monstrous creatures and spectacular destruction. With Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Taylor Russell joining its Korean cast, HOPE takes on the scale of a Hollywood blockbuster while retaining the brutality, dark humour and abrupt changes of mood that make Korean genre cinema so exciting.

Something has arrived near a remote South Korean village, and the local police and hunters are badly outmatched. The action spreads across wrecked streets, dense forests and winding mountain roads.

The action sequences are the main attraction. A police-car escape becomes an extended creature pursuit, while gun battles and horseback stunts turn the forest into a battlefield. Na keeps introducing complications, making each desperate escape more difficult.

Behind the digital creatures is substantial physical filmmaking. Na staged stunts in front of the camera wherever possible. Hong Kyung-pyo, the cinematographer behind PARASITE and BURNING (which we screened last week and the week before), captures the vehicles, horses and destruction with precision.

Hwang Jung-min, Hoyeon and Zo In-sung lead the local resistance. Their predicament leaves plenty of room for absurdity: people swear, bicker and try to assert authority while everything around them falls apart. Thankfully, there are periods in-between the elaborately staged set pieces that allow you time to catch your breath before Na ramps up the action again.
