(Un)orthodox: Breaking the Rules in Short-Story Writing

In this workshop, Luxembourg-based writer John-Paul Gomez and the participants will look at short stories that are unconventional, both in structure and in terms of the stories they tell. They will examine why unorthodox forms can not only be more impactful but can free up writers from the anxiety-inducing constraints of convention and help them to find inspiration. Participants will have the chance to brainstorm ideas, get off to a running start with stories of their own, and share their freshly created work with the workshop group.

John-Paul Gomez is the creator of the satire blog the Luxembourg Wurst and winner of Luxembourg's 2022 National Literary Competition for his collection “The Idiot of St. Benedict and Other Stories,” which was published the following year by Black Fountain Press. He is hard at work on his second collection as well as a novel. He has also recently made strides toward his life-long dream of being a filmmaker, having written and directed the short comedy film “D’Support Group,” which was part of Season Two of Filmreakter’s Quickies series. An animated series he co-created called “Wurst News,” produced by Fireflies, is currently in production and will be released in the near future.
